고제민은 인천에서 태어나 성장하며 도시 인천을 작업의 근간으로 삼아왔다. 바다와 항구, 섬과 포구를 시간과 기억이 응축된 장소로 통찰하며, 회화와 출간 작업을 통해 그 세계를 꾸준히 확장하고 있다. 작가는 지금까지 25회의 개인전과 다수의 기획전을 통해 도시의 표면 너머에 숨겨진 이야기들을 펼쳐 보여왔다.
고제민의 회화는 단순한 풍경의 재현을 넘어, 소멸해가는 공간과 그 속에 축적된 삶의 궤적을 고요히 소환한다. 2011년 인천아트플랫폼 개인전 〈색을 벗다〉를 기점으로 도시와 해안선, 항구와 섬을 주요 서사로 삼아 인천의 풍경을 심도 있게 탐구해왔다. 〈북성포구–노을〉, 〈인천의 섬–백령도〉, 〈기억의 반추〉 등의 연작에서는 장소에 깃든 시간성과 기억의 층위를 섬세하게 풀어냈으며, 〈엄마가 된 바다〉, 〈인천 담다〉, 〈푸른 기억〉, 〈시간의 풍경〉으로 이어지는 여정에서는 개인의 기억과 지역의 역사를 교차시키며 인천의 정체성을 기록해 왔다.
2024년 개인전 〈도시, 푸른빛 너머〉에서는 푸른 색조를 통해 산업화의 격동을 견뎌온 해안선과 사람들의 삶을 호출한다. 작가는 상처와 기억을 안고, 푸른빛 너머로 이어지는 희망과 회복의 가능성을 제시하며 작업의 지평을 넓혔다.
고제민의 회화는 변화하는 도시 속에 박제된 시간을 되살려 우리 앞에 놓는다. 그의 화면 속 도시는 물리적 장소를 넘어, 기억과 존재를 성찰하게 하는 사유의 공간으로 확장된다.
Born and raised in Incheon, Ko Jemin has established the city as the bedrock of her artistic practice. Viewing its seas, harbors, islands, and ports as vessels of time and memory, she has consistently engaged in both painting and publication. Through 25 solo exhibitions and numerous curated group shows, Ko has unveiled the profound narratives that lie beneath the surface of the urban landscape.
Ko’s work transcends mere representation. She quietly summons vanishing spaces and the accumulated traces of life, bringing the layered textures of memory to the canvas. Beginning with her 2011 solo exhibition Shedding Colors at Incheon Art Platform, she has explored Incheon’s cityscape, coastline, and islands as her central narratives. In series such as Bukseong Port – Sunset, Islands of Incheon – Baengnyeongdo, and Reflections of Memory, she delicately unfolds the temporal depth of these locales. Her subsequent projects—including The Sea as Mother, Embracing Incheon, Blue Memories, and Landscapes of Time—interweave urban scenery with personal recollection and historical context, meticulously recording the identity of Incheon.
In her 2024 solo exhibition, The City, Beyond the Blue Light, Ko utilizes a palette of blue to evoke the coastline’s industrial turbulence and the lives of those who endured it. Here, she presents a vision of hope and recovery that emerges from the depths of scars and memories, reaching toward the light.
Ko Jemin’s paintings resurrect the time embedded within the shifting urban landscape. In her work, the city evolves beyond a geographical location, expanding into a contemplative space for reflecting on memory and existence.
